And God Disappeared in a Puff of Logic…

What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make His way home

So, Alanis Morissette is kind of a lazy philosopher, but she’s asked an interesting question.  I prefer the way Douglas Adams put it though, in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.  What if God is, in fact, a crazy old hermit hold up in a tin shack on some unnamed planet in some distant corner of the galaxy?  What if God doesn’t even realize that he created the universe?  What if he’s trapped in a loop of existential confusion, and questions whether prayers are for him or are actually serenades for his cat?

Edit:  Alanis Morissette had nothing to do with the song One of Us, from which the above lyrics are taken.  She, in fact, didn’t ever even perform or record a cover of the song.  Though many people seem to think it was Morissette, it was in fact Joan Osborne.  Either way…I have the same view of the message.

  1. I love the idea of God being a hermit somewhere off in the distance. So, now you have me wondering….what if he is some highly evolved but mentally challenged alien who created us for fun, but became scared and ran off?
